When it comes to organising an event, whether it be a small local event or a large scale marathon or festival, Health and Safety of your guests always has to be a high priority.

First aid cover or medical event cover has become an important part of all public, sporting and corporate events. By providing First Aid cover, not only do visitors see that event organisers aren't overlooking safety, but they know that they have a place to go to in an emergency or if they feel unwell. It helps them enjoy the event as much as possible.

Many insurance companies will now require a minimum level of first aid or medical cover at a public event. The HSE have set guidelines on the recommended amount of First Aider's and Medic's at each type of event. Most insurers will not grant a policy without you arranging First Aid Cover.

You should ideally look to have First Aid cover when any staff are on working on a site, from setting up and taking down to the day and time of the actual event. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 states that employers have to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These regulations apply to all workplaces including event setups, regardless of type and no distinction is made between staff that are paid workers or who are volunteers.

At smaller events, you will still require First Aid cover, however on a smaller level. The Health and Safety Executive state that the First Aider at an event should have First Aid as their sole role, you cannot have a member of the event team who is also a First Aider. This is against HSE regulations.
