Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

Having the correct paediatric first aid provision is not only a statutory requirement for the majority of childcare providers, it is extremely important for the safety of children.

Over a 2 day period, Learners will develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations, including: assessing an emergency situation, dealing with an unresponsive infant or child, CPR, choking, meningitis, head and spinal injuries, anaphylaxis, asthma and more.

The objective of the qualification is to benefit Learners by enabling them to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations when looking after children.

Successful candidates will learn the roles and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider, and will be equipped with the necessary skills to administer safe and effective treatment when dealing with a range of paediatric first aid situations.

Who is it designed for?

The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) qualification is ideal for those who work or intend to work in a childcare setting as it is been specifically designed to fulfil Ofsted’s first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and childminders.

The Paediatric First Aid Syllabus Includes:

  1. The roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  2. Assessing an emergency situation
  3. Dealing with an unresponsive infant or child
  4. Recovery Position
  5. CPR and AED
  6. Choking
  7. Head and Spinal Injuries
  8. Fractures
  9. Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions
  10. Meningitis
  11. Asthma
  12. Febrile Convulsions
  13. Seizures
  14. Diabetic emergencies
  15. Poisoning
  16. Burns and scalds
  17. Electric shock
  18. External bleeding
  19. Hypovolaemic shock
  20. Eye, ear and nose conditions
  21. Bites and stings
  22. Minor injuries
  23. Treatment for hot and cold body temperatures
  24. First Aid Kits

Assessment

6 x Practical assessments, 2 x Theory assessments (Multiple Choice Question Papers) and continuous formative assessment conducted throughout the course. Upon successful completion, certification is valid for three years*.

Re-qualification

*Under the current guidelines it is strongly recommended that first aid trained staff attend a half-day update every 12 months - before completing their full re-qualification training at the three year point.
